Income Tax Return Due Date vs Last Date AY 2023-24: Difference

While ITR due date and last date are often seen as same by many, there is a difference between the two. Let’s understand.

The due date is the date by which you can file ITR without paying any late fee or penalty.

However, the last date for ITR filing is the date by when you can file a belated ITR by paying a Late Fee and penal interest (if applicable).

As per Income Tax rules, if a person fails to file ITR before the due date, s/he can submit a belated return of income before the last date by paying a fee and penal interest.

After the last date, no ITR can be filed, except by the notice of the tax.

Therefore, it is important to file your ITR before the due date.

The Due Date of ITR filing for AY 2023-24 is July 31, 2023 for non-audit cases, unless extended by the Government.

The Due Date of ITR filing for AY 2023-24 is October 31, 2023 for audit cases, unless extended by the Government.

The Last Date to File ITR for AY 2023-24 is December 31, 2023.
