Pamban railway bridge is nearing completion and will become operational soon
It is India's first vertical-lift bridge connecting the mainland with Rameswaram Island
Railway Board chairperson visited Rameswaram to review the progress and stated that the reconstruction work is going well
Train services between Mandapam and Rameswaram Island were suspended in Dec 2022
Rail traffic on old Pamban bridge was permanently stopped owing to safety concerns regarding stability of century-old bridge
The new 2.05-km-long bridge is being built parallel to the old one and was started by RVNL in Feb 2020
The foundation stone for the new Indian Railways bridge was laid by PM Modi in November 2019
The new bridge is expected to allow higher-speed and increase rail traffic between mainland and Rameswaram
The old bridge had limitations like including a low vertical clearance causing splashing of sea water on the girders
The new bridge will have increased height and advanced electro-mechanical controlled systems
The completion, initially set for December 2021, was extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic
