India's metro system to become world's second largest in 2.5 yrs

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has applauded the growth of metro transport in India.
He said that India will soon boast the world’s second-largest urban metro system.
This feat will be achieved within the next two and a half years, he added.
Emphasizing the growth, Puri highlighted that currently India has a ridership of once crore passengers daily.
India currently has 945 kms of metro system, with an additional 1,000 kms under construction.
Puri said today urban transport has made it easy to get from one part of a city to another.
“More people are taking to urban transport,” he added.
He credited the visionary initiative of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee for initiating the metro system in 2002.
