A boss placed an employee on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) after they refused to work during their approved leave days and on Sundays, the only day that the Redditor claims they get off from work. The employee, who goes by the handle “iamsadsometimes1” on Reddit, shared their experience on Reddit’s “IndianWorkplace” community, which they marked under the “Workplace Toxicity” label. As per the post, the employee is expected to meet “rigid deadlines” by working for 5-6 hours on Sundays.

“Put on PIP because I had refused to work on my weekends and leave,” wrote the frustrated employee on Reddit’s community, which was created in October 2023 to provide a safe space for employees to rant without their bosses or HR listening. As per the data available on the community, around 40,000 people are still waiting for their pending salaries.

“First things first, my organisation only has a Sunday off. On top of that, my manager has expectations that we spend 5-6 hours on Sundays as well to meet the very rigid deadlines that have been set for us,” the Redditor said.

They further revealed that they got their four-day leave approved “after a lot of debate”, but with a condition that they had to finish their targets whenever they can. When the Redditor retorted that they cannot because they would need to travel throughout their leaves, the boss just told them, “I would like to see.”

“iamsadsometimes1” added that they couldn’t complete the pending tasks during their off days, as they indicated to their manager. “As expected, I could not work during my EL and when I went back to the office yesterday, my manager was very cold and distant to me when I came back. By evening time, I got a call from HR that my performance has been subpar and that I have been put into PIP.”

They turned to Reddit for advice and shared that they cannot switch jobs because they have just joined five months ago.

In the comments section of the Reddit post, the employee shared that they have received a separate email stating that they have been put on PIP for “defaulting timelines and not meeting expectations”.

“HR has told that policies are confidential and the entire policy cannot be shared, only the excerpt and the clause applicable to me have been shared. I have received an auto-notification via email that PIP has been initiated against me. I have also received a separate email from my manager in the loop stating that I have been put in PIP for defaulting on my timelines and not meeting the set expectations,” they wrote in the comments section, adding that they are one hundred per cent sure that their manager and not the HR has placed them on PIP.

The comment was in response to another Redditor who was curious if the company had a policy or criteria to put people on PIP.

Another suggested that the employee should send an email to HR, CC-ing their boss, to ask for KRA/parameters that qualify for PIP. “They have done that already, but the reasons mentioned are qualitative and generic. No quantitative or measurable reason has been provided,” the OP replied.
