Bengaluru’s worsening road conditions have once again caught public attention after a Reddit post showed a pothole near KR Road being covered with an old couch. The post highlighted that the pothole is nearly half a foot deep and wide enough for a two-wheeler to fall into, prompting citizens to improvise with makeshift warnings.
Civic Apathy Drives Unusual Measures
According to the Reddit post, the couch was placed by local shopkeepers as a temporary alert to prevent accidents, as no permanent repair had been carried out. “The traffic police have just placed barricade and cones to indicate the people travelling on the road of the pothole. People just happen to avoid the pothole and move on, even the people who do business right next door just seem to be moving trucks next to it, but never complain or try to get the pothole filled,” the Redditor wrote while sharing the image.
The user also noted that they filed a complaint through the Namma Bengaluru (Sahaya Portal) app but had not received any response. “I honestly don’t have much expectations from BBMP (or GBA now) to solve the issue,” they added, pointing to long-standing delays in civic action.
Public Frustration and Sarcastic Responses
Social media quickly reacted to the viral image. One user commented, “What an idea. A two wheeler hits the couch, the rider falls on sofa instead of falling on road. Then comes the shout ‘Cheta, two tea’.” Another added, “Someone should flip the couch and put a board that says ‘Rest a while during traffic’ or something sarcastically.”
The Redditor concluded with a note of pessimism, stating, “The roads shouldn’t be this bad in the first place, but I don’t think we are going to see big shift in road quality until the next ten years. Change has to come within the govt, or the people have to force change upon them, until then, change seems bleak.”
