Australia rounded off a dominant Ashes performance at home, winning the series 4-1. While England had arrived on Australian shores with a lot of hope, they finished the tour with just a solitary win under their belt.

For the hosts, it was their experienced stars coming to the party with Travis Head scoring 629 runs, Mitchell Starc picking up 31 wickets and Steven Smith accumulating 86 runs.

After the final match at the SCG, when Smith was asked if he was eager to win the 2027 Ashes in England, he said that while he would want to “tick that off” his list, whether he gets there or not is a different question, probably hinting at the possibility of a retirement.

“I’m sure everyone’s excited to go there and try and win the Ashes. It’s something that I certainly haven’t done in my career, and something I’d like to tick off, whether I get there or not; it’s a different question. The squad we’ve had over the last four or five years has been amazing. So hopefully we can keep growing, getting better,” Smith told Fox Cricket.

Smith has scored 8 Test hundreds in England, averaging 54.27 from 23 Test matches he played from 2010 to 2026. However, he has never been part of an Ashes-winning team in England.

Smith has already retired from ODIs

Notably, the 36-year-old has already retired from the ODIs. He announced the decision in March 2025, following Australia’s ICC Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to India in Dubai.

Even though he has not officially announced his retirement from the T20I format, he is not currently in their T20I scheme of things, focusing only on the longest format.

Smith has 7 more hundreds than Virat Kohli already

Smith 10,763 runs from 123 matches at an average of 56.05. He has 37 Test hundreds to his name, 7 more than Virat Kohli who retired after 30 Test centuries and 9230 Test runs from 123 Tests. While Smith has chosen to elongate his Test career, Kohli has opted to continue playing the ODIs with an eye on the World Cup next year.
