Former Mizoram Ranji Trophy cricketer K. Lalremruata passed away on Thursday, just hours after he collapsed during a local cricket match. Lalremruata, 38, who lived in Maubawk near Aizawl, was playing for Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club (VRCC) in the second division screening tournament of the Khaled Memorial at the Suaka cricket ground near the Sairang railway station when the incident happened, PTI reported citing officials.
According to the Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM), he suffered a stroke while the match was going on and later died despite being taken for treatment.
The match was part of the Khaled Memorial 2nd Division Screening Tournament between Venghnuai Raiders CC and Chawnpui ILMOV CC. Lalremruata suddenly collapsed on the field while the game was underway. He was quickly helped and taken for medical attention, but doctors could not save him.
In a statement, the CAM confirmed the cause of death and offered their condolences to his family, calling his passing a big loss for cricket in Mizoram. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family; may God comfort them as they navigate this great loss,” the CAM said.
Who was K. Lalremruata?
K. Lalremruata was a wicketkeeper-batter who played a significant role in the development of cricket in Mizoram. He played for Mizoram twice in the Ranji Trophy and seven times in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. A wicketkeeper, he made his First-Class debut in 2018 against Meghalaya and played his last competitive match in 2022 against Nagaland.
He was also well known in Mizoram’s local cricket circle, playing for multiple clubs and serving on the Senior Tournament Committee, where he worked to support cricket at the grassroots level.

BCCI mourns Lalremruata’s death
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also mourned his death. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Mizoram cricketer K Lalremruata. He proudly represented Mizoram in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The BCCI extends heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and the Mizoram cricket community,” BCCI Domestic posted on X.
Mizoram’s Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar also expressed grief over his passing and news of the tragedy affected cricket activities beyond the state as well.
After the incident, Assam Cricket cancelled all matches scheduled for Thursday. This included the 2nd Division Screening Tournament games at SCG, Sihhmui, the 3rd Division Screening Tournament semi-finals at Lawipu Playground, and the Samagra Inter-School Cricket Tournament for both boys and girls at Mualpui. New schedules will be announced later.
