The International Cricket Council (ICC) roped in Scotland at the eleventh hour to replace Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2026, after the latter declined to travel to India. While the news sparked celebration across Scotland and the United Kingdom, it has triggered a frantic search for a kit sponsor.

Cricket Scotland Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Trudy Lindblade publicly appealed for sponsors during a recent interview with BBC’s Stumped, highlighting the commercial pressure of the late call-up.

Seven days to find a sponsor

Speaking to broadcasters, Lindblade said, “We’re absolutely delighted to have been invited, but it is certainly in unique and challenging circumstances.”

“If we’ve got kits, that’s a bonus. If not, you might see us in our regular Cricket Scotland playing kits. We’ve got seven days to turn around a sponsor,” added the Australian executive, who joined the board to modernize the game in Scotland.

Visa for Pakistani-heritage players

While receiving the call from ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta was a milestone for the Associate nation, the logistical hardships were expected. Beyond facing elite opponents on the field, the board is racing to secure travel clearance for ace pacer Safyaan Sharif.

Due to his Pakistani heritage, Sharif faces a more rigorous visa application process for India, a hurdle previously experienced by England veterans like Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, and most recently by Shoaib Bashir. Addressing the visa concerns, Lindblade noted, “We’re all confident at the moment we can get everybody out there.”

Scotland sympathetic towards Bangladesh

Despite benefiting from Bangladesh’s withdrawal, the Scottish camp remains empathetic toward the players missing out on the global stage.

“We do have sympathy for the Bangladesh players and their fans because, as cricketers, they just want to play the game,” Lindblade said. “But these are circumstances that are beyond our control. They are matters for the ICC and the BCB to work through. As human beings, that empathy is absolutely there.”
