India’s Sarvesh Kushare secured the silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Monday, delivering the country’s best-ever finish in the event after clearing 2.25m.
The national record holder finished second on countback after failing to clear 2.28m, while Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford claimed gold with the same height but fewer misses. Scotland’s Jack Kimani took the bronze with a clearance of 2.20m.
The silver medal marks Sarvesh’s first major multi-sport medal and improves on the bronze won by Tejaswin Shankar at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
National record holder holds nerve after early scare
Sarvesh, who set a new Indian national record of 2.31m at the Inter-State Athletics Championships last month, looked in complete control through the early stages of the competition. He cleared 2.05m, 2.10m, 2.15m and 2.20m on his first attempts before facing a nervy battle at 2.25m.
After failing twice at the height, the 24-year-old produced a successful clearance on his third and final attempt to stay in medal contention.
Both Sarvesh and Beckford were unable to negotiate 2.28m, but the Jamaican’s cleaner card at the previous height proved decisive under countback rules.
India had two other representatives in the event. Aadarsh Ram cleared 2.15m before bowing out at 2.20m, finishing fifth overall.
Tejaswin’s campaign ends early, Aadarsh finishes fifth
Tejaswin Shankar, who won bronze at the previous Commonwealth Games, started his campaign at 2.05m but was unable to register a successful clearance. Managing a longstanding knee issue, he opted to withdraw from the competition, with his focus expected to remain on the decathlon.
Elsewhere in athletics, Tejas Shirse endured a difficult outing in the men’s 110m hurdles final. After qualifying with a time of 13.76 seconds in the heats, Shirse clipped the opening hurdle in the final and appeared to struggle with discomfort for the remainder of the race, eventually finishing eighth in 15.40 seconds.
Sarvesh’s silver adds another athletics medal to India’s Glasgow campaign and continues the country’s encouraging run in field events after a successful opening phase of the Games.
