Sakshi Malik’s coach claims the wrestler has not received cash reward from Haryana government

After Sakshi Malik, the poster girl of Indian wrestling, made India proud on the global sports arena by pocketing a long-awaited medal in Rio 2016 Olympics, she was showered with announcements of plenty of cash rewards by the government and private bodies as accolades. However, the rewards have not been given to the bronze medallist even after a month since the historic win.

After Sakshi Malik, the poster girl of Indian wrestling, made India proud on the global sports arena by pocketing a long-awaited medal in Rio 2016 Olympics, she was showered with announcements of plenty of cash rewards by the government and private bodies as accolades. However, the rewards have not been given to the bronze medallist even after a month since the historic win. Kuldeep Malik, the coach of the 24-year-old freestyle wrestler, opened up on Tuesday on getting cash prize from the state government. The Haryana government had promised a cash reward of 2.5 crores for Sakshi after she won a bronze in the women’s wrestling 58kg category. But Kuldeep has alleged that she has not received the money yet, according to an ANI report.

He said that they “tried to talk to state government, but unable to get through”. However, being on a positive note, he said “the Governmemnt is still looking into the matter” and he “believed that work is under progress.”

Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler who won the first medal of Rio 2016 on its 12th day, bringing immense glory to the nation. Soon after this, Haryana Government announced to give Rs 2.5 crores to the wrestler. It was followed by Rs one crore from Delhi government, Rs 60 lakh from Railway ministry, Rs 20 lakh from Indian Olympic Association, Rs five lakh from All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Rs 1.01 lakh from Bollywood actor Salman Khan along with others.

Besides Malik, PV Sindhu, who won a silver medal in the badminton women’s single, also received appreciation from all quarters and cash rewards from state governments and public sector bodies. Her major rewards include Rs five crore from Telangana government, Rs three crore from Andhra Pradesh government, Rs two crore from Delhi Government, Rs 75 lakh from Bharat Petroleum, Rs 30 lakh from the Indian Olympic Association, Rs 5 lakh from the AIFF and Rs 1.01 lakh from Salman Khan among others.
