World number one golfer Rory McIlroy kicked off his US PGA title defence with a strong first round 71, six weeks after injuring his ankle playing football.
The Northern Irishman finished the opening day one under par and is tied for 24th place with reigning Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth.
McIlroy said that it was great to be back, adding that he was quite nervous on the first tee, the BBC reported.
Reflecting on his injury, McIlroy said that his ankle had been feeling great all week and insisted that he had full confidence in it.
This was McIlroy’s first tournament since June after recovering from a ruptured ankle ligament.
