After her prolific performance at the gymanstic vault finals at the Rio Olympics, 2016, 23-year-old Dipa Karmakar might soon be honoured with the reputable Khel Ratna award. Karmakar, who missed the Bronze medal by a whisker, created history as she became the first Indian athlete to enter the vault finals at the prestigious Olympic games. Her stellar performance was appreciated by everyone who saw her swirl and turn at the finals with a wonderful finish that bagged her the position of world number four. She vaulted into spotlight after finishing 8th in the qualifying rounds. The Tripura girl was lauded with appreciated from Bollywood as well with Amitabh Bachchan saying, ” “#DipaKarmakar .. the pride of India .. your story is what compels us to do better … and we will !! Many congratulations !!”
Acknowledging the appreciation she recieved during her performance at the Rio Olympics, she said, “…there’s no country like India. So I’m happy if I could make so many people happy. I wish I could give them a medal. But I wont leave it till I win gold in Tokyo.” Dipa Karmakar may recieve the Khel Ratna from the President of India Pranab Mukherjee on National Sports Day i.e August 2. However, the information is yet to be confirmed. Dipa’s coach Bisweshwar Nandi might also be conferred with the prestigious Dronacharya Award. With its biggest contingent this year, India is yet to shine with a medal at the Rio Olympics, 2016.
