Congratulating Sakshi Malik on her Bronze medal at Rio Olympics in 2016, Indian legend Virender Sehwag took a witty jab at the practice of female foeticide in the country. The practice is still at large in Sakshi’s home state of Haryana. Sehwag, known for his sarcastic tweets, took this moment to heartily congratulate Sakshi on saving the day for India after Vinesh Phogat had to be carried out due to a ligament tear. Sakshi, then went on to defeat Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova 8-5 after trailing by 0-5 in the first round. Sakshi’s mother, Sudesh Malik said, “India’s daughter has stopped India’s medal drought. So proud of her.”

Sehwag has been very outspoken about the issue in the past, this time, took on the issue at the perfect moment. Stating that the Rohtak girl had saved India’s pride, he cited Sakshi’s example of what a girl can achieve if she is allowed the right to have a birth. “When the going gets tough, it’s our girls who get going.”, Sehwag said. The state of Haryana has had a tradition of producing medal winners in the past. Unfortunately, it also has a very high rate of female foeticide.

Sakshi’s medal comes as a sigh of relief for India, as the nation saw disappointing performances and remained on the wrong side of most close encounters. After a medalless stint for the first 11 days and Vinesh Phogat’s unfortunate injury on the 12th, India’s fear of an empty medal tally wasn’t looking unreal. However, Sakshi, battled 5 gruelling battles to come back to win a bronze in the 58 kg wrestling category.

Sehwag was at his witty best, as he congratulated the wrestler on her medal win for the country.

Coming from a state famous for its athletes and infamous for the sense of patriarchal supremacy, Sakshi is a beacon of hope for all those girls who desire to achieve greatness. She, not only won the medal for India, she did it in a way similar to the life of women in the country. Battling for long, struggling, beaten, bruised, coming from way behind, to find a victory with a flourish. This is not the story of Sakshi Malik’s Rio Olympics stint, but of the common woman in the country, more prominently in the state of Haryana.
