Sreejesh Raveendran: Know all about the Indian captain who will lead hockey team at Rio Olympics

At a time when Indian men's hockey team is all set to perform in Rio Olympics, we have came up with a brief profile of the team's captain Sreejesh Raveendran.

At a time when Indian men’s hockey team is all set to perform in Rio Olympics, we have come up with a brief profile of the team’s captain Sreejesh Raveendran. Sreejesh is India hockey team’s goalkeeper as well as captain and has won prestigious Arjuna award in August last year. Sreejesh is quite vocal on few instances when controversies erupted over the sports awards and said, “Athletes or coaches should not approach the court to get awards”. Sreejesh was the part of Indian hockey team which won gold medal in Asian Games in 2014.

Life: Sreejesh Ravindran or Parattu Raveendran Sreejesh was born in Kizhakkambalam village of Kerala on May 08, 1988. His father P V Raveendran is a farmer and his mother Usha Raveendran is housewife. He has one sibling – Sreejith. Sreejesh completed his schooling in Kizhakkambalam and is a history graduate from Kollam, Kerala. P R Sreejesh got married to former long jumper and Ayurveda doctor Alisha in May, 2013. Sreejesh got married just before he was to join the national camp.

Career and awards: Since Sreejesh was also a part of Indian national junior hockey team, he has a rich experience of the field. Sreejesh Raveendran started his career with junior national team against against Australia in 2004. The South Asian Games, 2006 brought him onboard the national team. Several awards and medal are on Sreejesh name. Sreejesh was named ‘Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ after India won Junior Asia Cup, 2008 and the same award conferred to him again in Asia Cup, 2013. Sreejesh was also a part of Summer Olympics in London (2012) and World Cup, 2014. He was also a part of Indian team which won gold medal in Asian Games in 2014. Sreejesh was awarded Arjuna award in  2015 for his exemplary contribution to the Indian hockey. Sreejesh was a proud member of the team which won silver medals in 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games. Kerala Sports Council has also bestowed him with prestigious Lt Col GV Raja Award for the year 2014-2015.

So, to name some bigger awards, Arjuna award, Best Goalkeeper Award, Hockey India’s Best Player award, Asian Games gold medal and Champions Trophy silver medal add to his glory. Sreejesh also plays for Uttar Pradesh Wizards in Hockey India League (HIL).
