Slamming the questions raised over his Rio visit, Haryana Sports Minister Anil Vij said that those criticising his visit to the Olympics have defective thinking and are responsible for starting a ‘hate campaign against our country.’
Justifying his visit to Rio, he said that the trip was planned to look after the urgent needs and solve the immediate problems faced by the Indian contingent. Announcing an award sum of Rs 6 crore on Monday for the Indian players who win the gold medal in Rio Olympics 2016, he said, “want to stand by our players in every stag.” Besides, the gold medal, those bagging the silver one will be awarded a sum of Rs 4 crore and those with a Bronze medal finish will be awarded Rs 2.5 crore. Anil Vij said, “I’ve come here to stand by our players who’re fighting for India and see what problems they face.”
Congress leaders had earlier called the Haryana Sports Minister’s visit an ‘insult to injury’ referring to the controversy surrounding Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel which is still ripe. Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi questioned the purpose and object of a ‘non-sports person’ suddenly going to the Olympics in the middle of the event. Many questions were also raised over the massive state expenditure of Rs 1 crore on Vij’s visit to Rio to which Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had replied saying, the state government has an expenditure budget of Rs 200 crore on development of sports and players. Adding to this, he said that the minister’s visit was necessary to support the players and boost their confidence. Vij along with his nine-member delegation reached Brazil after he received a number of messages from the Indian contingent requesting him to come to Rio, reported PTI.
