As the Olympics 2016 kicks start at Rio De Janeiro, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today said that the entire nation is standing behind the Indian Contingent. Wishing them good luck, he tweeted on his offfice twitter handle, “Good luck Team India for #Rio2016! A special shout out to all our athletes with events today. You have a billion hearts beating for you!”
In the spectacular opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics 2016 at the Macarana Stadium, around 70 athletes and 24 officials walked in as the 95th country. Retracing the history and culture of Brazil from the Portugal era to it’s rise as a city, the ceremony enrapt the viewers around the globe with live performances and a musical show with around 1,500 artists. Celebrating world peace and environment, the programme highlighted the essence of Brazil with its synchronized fireworks.
The Indian contingent was led by gold-winning shooter Abhinav Bindra with the national flag in hand. The women were seen in traditional sarees and a blue blazer while the men donned a nazy blue blazer on their opening ceremony walk as they waved at the public. This year, India breaks records of sending the largest contingent to summer Olympics with 119 atheletes competing in various sports over the next fifteen days.
The Indian men’s hockey team is all set to start off with India’s participation in men’s hockey Pool ‘B’ game where they will be playing against the Ireland team at 7:30pm today. Along with the hockey team, Indian tennis team of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna will also open against Poland in men’s doubles.
