Before the Rio Olympics 2016 opening ceremony marks the official start of the mega event, a few competitions have already begun. The ceremony though is expected to show the rich and free-spirited culture of Brazil. The South American nation is currently facing an economic crisis and thus has impacted the extravagance of the event. So, while the grandiosity related with the Opening ceremony of Olympics might not be that grand, the ceremony will be a representation of hope and a brighter future for the nation. Though the officials have remained tight-lipped about the details of the night, rumors emerging from information about rehearsals gives us an idea of what the night might hold.

As mentioned above, the spectacle is not expected to be a pricey affair. The budget estimated for al the ceremonies, including the closing of the Olympics and the Paralympics was $113.9 million, which was cut down to $55.9 million. That is a big slash of 50% on the original estimation. Creative Director of the Opening ceremony for the Olympics 2016, said that there is an estimation, that is 12 times lesser the amount spent in London and 20 times of that in Beijing. In an interview with U.K’s Daily mail, he said that he felt good by not spending money that Brazil couldn’t afford. He was of the opinion that something could be done with heart and passion, involving a concept without spending such amounts of money.

The environment will have a huge role in the entire ceremony as Brazil is the home to the last garden in the world, the Amazon rainforest. Executive Producer Marco Balich, on Tuesday, had said that the ceremony will not be about how the world is going to end because of the global warming but about a message for the hope of a better future. He said that sustainability will be one of the show’s three pillars, along with smiling and “gambiarrs”, which he considers as the best way of making the night eventful with the limited resources at hand.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has been rumored to be involved in the ceremony. The details of any sort of performances have not been revealed. Football legend Pele is said to have been offered the honour of lighting the flame to mark the beginning of the Rio Olympics 2016. Pele is currently on a sponsored trip and will only light the torch if he can make it. Pele is the only footballer to have won the World Cup thrice.

Other celebrities such as actors Judi Dench and Fernanda Montenegro, singers Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, and Gilberto Gil will also don the stage on the biggest ceremony of the year.

The ceremony will take place at the Maracana stadium in the city of Rio de Janeiro on Friday at 21:00 (GMT) and 04:30 (IST)(Saturday in India).
