Run for Rio: With a high-spirited note and a motivating speech, PM Narendra Modi on Sunday flagged off the run organized ahead of Rio Olympics 2016. The run shall start from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and conclude at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

“The objective of the run is to not only demonstrate to our athletes that the whole country is proud of them and
wishing them all the best in the forthcoming Rio Olympics, but also to connect public at large, especially children and youth, with the Olympic spirit and power of sports,” Sports Minister Vijay Goel, who is personally supervising the preparations, said in a statement.

08.23 am: The players who were chosen this time, were given options for their coaches, ground, training centre etc. We have deployed Rs 30 lakhs to 1 crore on each player this time, says PM Modi at Dhyanchand Stadium.

08.20 am: We have made special arrangements for our players this time. Right from the food they like to the food they should have, we have taken care of everything this time: PM Modi

08.17 am: We didn’t get a lot of time to prepare this time. If you compare the statistics, we have in proved since the last few years. Earlier, players used to arrive at the location 2 days before the Olympics, thereby little time was in their hands. However, this time we have sent them 15 days before so that they can adjust in that location and perform their utmost, said PM Narendra Modi.

08.16 am: We have been associated with Olympics for more than 100 years. But it is for the first time that a contingent of 119 players are participating from India. In 2020, Olympics will be held in Tokyo. I wish to see more than 200 players there, said PM Modi

08.04 am: Sports Minister Goel delivers the welcome address. “Our biggest contingent comprising of 119 athletes is going to participate in Rio this year, we are extremely proud of this fact”, said Goel.

The event shall commence from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and conclude at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and is expected see a footfall of over 20,000 children.

Calling out everybody, Sport Minister Goel also tweeted about the event:

Delhi Police will look after the security arrangements throughout the route. Screens will be installed at strategic points for enabling participants to witness the address of Prime Minister before he flags off the Run.
