Ecstatic after the announcement of getting Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, gymnast Dipa Karmakar has expressed her joy and determination of winning an Olympic medal in future. “Very happy. Future plan is to bag an Olympic medal for India”, said Dipa Karmakar after getting the news of her nomination for Khel Ratna honour. Not only Dipa, but wrestler Sakshi Malik’s mother has also expressed happiness over her daughter’s nomination for top sports honour in the country. Expressing a bit of surprise, Sakshi’s mother said that she was always sure of her daughter competing in Olympic games, but winning Khel Ratna at this early age was quite unexpected. Hailing the award as a great step, she said that it will encourage her daughter to perform better in future.
Sakshi Malik, P V Sindhu, Jitu Rai and Dipa Karmakar will receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for their performances at Rio Olympic 2016. The Khel Ratna is the highest honour bestowed upon a sportsperson in the country. Meanwhile, Dipa Karmakar’s coach Bisheswar Nandi will also be honoured with the Dronacharya award for his efforts in the coaching of Dipa. While Sakshi Malik won a bronze in women’s wrestling, P V Sindhu nearly won a gold in the women’s singles badminton and helped restore some honour in what was feared to be dry Olympics season for the country.
Jitu Rai currently ranked No 3 in the world was the only player after Abhinav Bindra to make it to the finals of shooting event. Dipa Karmakar meanwhile came very close to winning a medal in gymnastics to stand 4th in her respective event.
