Rio 2016 Olympics: The fireworks are over, the samba on temporary hold – and now it’s time for Olympic athletes to take center stage in Rio de Janeiro. Dozens of competitions are being held Saturday in over 20 Olympic sports, ranging from archery to basketball, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, swimming and volleyball, among others. Twelve gold medals will be awarded. On Friday, Brazil laced its high-energy opening party for the games of the 31st Olympiad with a sobering message of the dangers of global warming. Graphic projections of world cities being swamped by rising seas set Rio de Janeiro’s otherwise fun and festive gala apart from other Olympic openers.
Brazilian marathoner Vanderlei De Lima has lit the cauldron at the Rio Games. De Lima was one of the suspected candidates after Pele revealed earlier Friday that health problems would keep him from attending the opening ceremony at Maracana Stadium. So 12 years later than he likely would have, De Lima got his golden moment. De Lima was leading the 2004 race at the Athens Games when a protester attacked and disrupted his run. De Lima wound up finishing third, but has been lauded for how he’s handled the incident. The Rio Games get into full swing Saturday just hours after Friday night’s opening ceremony. Medals will be awarded in men’s road cycling, an event starting at 9:30 a.m. and taking place on a six-hour grind of a course with twists, turns, climbs and striking views of the host city.
Also Saturday, medals will be awarded in four swimming events.
