Banter is pretty common among cricketers on Twitter and keeping up with the trend, Indian spinner R Ashwin and one of the most exciting former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs jumped onto the social media battleground. However, the exchange turned awkward as there was mention of match-fixing. Ashwin was promoting a shoe brand on his Twitter handle and talked about how comfortable and efficient they are while running to which Gibbs replied, “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now ashwin ”. Clearly, Gibbs tried to pull the Indian spinners leg who is not the fastest in the field and quickest between the 22 yards. However, Ashwin who was left a little cross replied quite harshly.

Ashwin took to Twitter and replied, “Surely not as fast you did mate, unfortunately I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.” Gibbs who was left speechless quickly accepted his defeat and said,”Can’t take a joke i see anyway moving swiftly on..”

Interestingly, Ashwin claimed that he was also joking all the while. He said,”I totally believed my reply was a joke too, but look how people and yourself perceived it. I am totally game for this sort of fun mate, we shall dine over this sometime.”

The episode that Ashwin was referring to dated back to 2000. Gibbs was implicated in the match-fixing case during South Africa’s tour of India. Hansie Cronje was leading the team back then. Notably, after being approached by Cronje to fix matches and score according to the bookies’ orders, Gibbs didn’t follow through, as per Indian Express report. However, he was suspended for six months.
