BCCI has announced the team for the upcoming T20 tri-series in Sri Lanka, starting March 6. Indian captain Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have been rested for the Nidahas Trophy. In the absence of Kohli, Rohit Sharma will lead a second-string team featuring the leading performers in domestic (Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and IPL) tournaments. While Sharma will captain the team, Shikhar Dhawan will be the vice-captain. The team has as many as six changes in the line-up. “MS Dhoni was not available for selection as he had requested for rest,” national selector MSK Prasad was quoted as saying in a press release.
The strike bowling attack of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah have also been rested along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya after the trio shared enormous workload on the just-concluded South African tour.
“We’ve kept in mind the workload and upcoming schedule while finalizing the team for Nidahas Trophy. The high-performance team has suggested that adequate rest should be given to our fast bowlers to help improve athletic performance, maximize rest and prevent injury,” Prasad added.
Mystery bowler Kuldeep Yadav has also not been included in Sri Lanka-bound Indian team. The selection committee has recalled keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, after his solid season in white-ball cricket including centuries in both national T20s and ODIs. Off-spinner Washington Sundar, all-rounder Deepak Hooda and pacer Mohammed Siraj are also making a comeback for the series against Sri Lanka. All-rounder Vijay Shankar is considered like for like replacement for Pandya.
Dinesh Karthik is expected to be the first keeper choice, with Pant being used as a pure batsman. The prominent performer to miss out was Mayank Agarwal who has scored 2000 plus runs in this season. “Mayank has not been selected because we are following a pattern. Any domestic performer will have to play India A before being considered for senior team selection,” a senior BCCI official close to selection committee said.
