Peru took the lead in the third minute of the game through forward Christian Cueva after a sloppy bit of work by the Brazilian defenders.

Neymar scored the equaliser two minutes later when he rose uncontested to nod in a curling Dani Alves cross, the BBC reported.

However, it was Douglas Costa’s late goal that sealed the victory for Brazil in the dying moments of the game.

Neymar was a constant threat and turned provider in injury time when he teed up Costa to secure all three points.

Earlier, Venezuela beat Colombia 1-0, making it the biggest upset of the tournament and claiming their first victory over their South American neighbours in the history of the competition.

Striker Jose Salomon Rondon scored the only goal of the Group C match in the 60th minute in Rancagua.
