Hockey wizard and Olympic Gold medallist Mohammed Shahid, died on Wednesday, aged 56, at a Gurgaon hospital due to severe liver problems and kidney failure.
Shahid, who was the captain of the Indian Hockey team in 1985-86, was admitted to SSL Hospital at BHU when he complained of pain in the stomach. After his health detoriorated, he was moved to Medanta Mendicity Hospital in Gurgaon.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Sports minister earlier this month had announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for ailing player.
Padma Shri Shahid who won the Arjuna Award in the year 1981, after retiring worked with the Indian railways in Varanasi.
He is survived by his wife, and twin children.
