The musical chair at Manchester United seems never-ending. The chair, after it was emptied by Ruben Amorim as manager of the Reds, will now be occupied by a former captain of the club, who has also served as interim manager or ‘caretaker’ previously.
Michael Carrick will take over from Amorim and will continue till the end of the season, Reuters reported. Currently serving as a manager at Middlesbrough, one of the oldest clubs in England and Wales, Carrick will don the hat that he had worn in 2021 after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
The Caretakers’ Club
While Carrick has been tasked with the position for the second time in five years, prior to him, several others have been in the chair, without much success. The story dates back to 2014 when a former club legend, Ryan Giggs, was appointed as caretaker manager.

After David Moyes, the chosen one to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, did not deliver according to the fans’ expectations, Giggs was handed the reins by the owners, the Glazer family.
Members of the Man Utd Caretakers’ Club
After Giggs, Carrick was the second caretaker when he took up the role in 2021. Ralf Rangnick was the first interim manager of the club, taking over from Carrick in the same year, managing the team till the end of the season.
Ruud van Nistelrooy of the Netherlands was made the caretaker manager after Erik ten Hag was removed from his post in October 2024. It was after Nistelrooy had handled the team for some time that Amorim was brought, all the way from Portugal, in search of better results.
But instead of a significant change in results, there is another change in the leadership, and the game is back to square one, with another interim manager handed the task to take over.
Details Of Carrick-Man Utd Deal
According to the report, United have agreed to an in-principle deal with their former skipper to take them through the season. They are sitting in the seventh position in the points table and have nothing else to play but the league.
The Red Devils are out of the FA Cup as well as the League Cup, and are not part of the European competitions either.

The biggest and also the immediate challenge of Carrick will be to face Pep Guardiola’s City in the Manchester Derby on January 17th. Since the derby is at MANU’s home ground, Old Trafford, and they are facing the mighty Blues, who are placed second in the points table, it is going to be a tough start for Carrick.
Already enduring their worst season in terms of fewest games (a total of only 40 games in a season) since 1914, United fans will be hoping for a major turnaround from their former leader.
Carrick As A Man Utd Player
The 44-year-old was a name to be reckoned with in his playing days. A solid defensive midfielder, Carrick joined United in 2006 and played most of his games during the golden era of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Appearing in 464 matches, he scored 24 goals and won 18 trophies with the team, including five Premier League titles. His other achievements included winning the UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Champions League once each, the League Cup thrice, and the FA Community Shield a record six times.
