IPL auction 2018: The IPL auctions did not disappoint the fans as it started with a boom when Shikhar Dhawan was stolen by Sunrisers Hyderabad from Kings XI Punjab for Rs 5.2 crore by using Right-to-Match (RTM) card. The top 5 buys in the initial half were Ben Stokes for Rs 12.5 crore (RR), Mitchell Starc for Rs 9.4 crore (KKR), R Ashwin for Rs 7.2 crore (KXIP), Glenn Maxwell for Rs 9 crore (DD) and KL Rahul for Rs 11 crore (KXIP). Interestingly, the IPL Governing Council has introduced the Right-to-match (RTM) concept for 2018 auctions. RTM card can be used to retain the player during the auctions and depends on the number of pre-auction retentions by a franchise. It means if a team has retained two players during the retention process they retain three through RTM at the auction- the maximum number of players that can be retained is five.

What is Right-to-Match (RTM) card?

A right-to-match card gives the franchise the opportunity to buy back its player during the auction by matching the highest bid made for the player by another franchise once the bidding is over. For example, if Kolkata Knight Riders decide not to retain Chris Lynn as one of its three players, and Sunrisers Hyderabad make the highest bid for the Australian batsman in the auction, KKR can retain him using a RTM card.
