After the pace duo of Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar went wicketless in the morning, Kohli decided to attack with the spinners. This reaped rewards as Ravindra Jadeja dismissed captain Alastair Cook, who was looking good at 46. R Ashwin joined the party in a short while, when he removed another key English batsman Joe Root for 21.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again came to India’s rescue on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test, grabbing four wickets, when England looked to take the game away from the home side. Every time Virat Kohli makes a change in bowling, the bowlers don’t disappoint him.

Despite that onslaught, debutant opener from Durham, Keaton Jennings (112) and Moeen Ali (50) forged an important partnership of 94 runs, before Ashwin removed both of them in a span of two balls, to bring India back into the game. From then on, the spin trio of Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav kept the screws tight, as India halted the flow of runs for England.

Session-wise, England dominated the first two sessions before Ashwin picked up three quick wickets, including that of debutant centurion Keaton Jennings in the final session.

This is the first Test in Wankhede stadium even since the retirement of legend Sachin Tendulkar, who played his 200th and final Test, which India won against West Indies. Notably, England have won both of their previous Tests here (in 2006 and 2012).
