In its 1st ever Test match on Indian soil, the visiting Bangladesh side had to toil hard for wickets, as the only moment for them came in the morning session when seamer Taskin Ahmed got rid off opening batsman KL Rahul, castling his off stump. India’s score then read 2-1. Then Murali Vijay and India number 3 Cheteshwar Pujara forged an important partnership of 178 runs to calm the early jitters and take the team a position from where a total in excess of 500-600 looks entirely possible. Pujara made a healthy 83 runs that included 9 fours, before being dismissed.

After the dismissal of Pujara, in came captain Virat Kohli. The Vijay-Kohli duo could only add 54 runs before Vijay was bowled by left-arm orthodox spinner Taijul Islam for a well-made 108 off 160 balls that included 12 fours and a six. It was Vijay’s 9th Test ton. Post the dismissal of Murali Vijay, Kohli was joined by Ajinkya Rahane, who replaced triple centurion Karun Nairr, which he scored in India’s previous Test against England, but was thereafter dropped to make way for Ajinkya who returns from an injury. Karun Nair became the fourth player ever to miss the subsequent Test after scoring a triple century after Andy Sandham, Len Hutton and Inzamam-ul-Haq.

At stumps, Kohli was playing at 111 runs, hitting 12 fours and Rahane was playing at 45 runs hitting 7 fours.
