India’s star opener Shikhar Dhawan who had missed the last two matches of the Sri Lankan tour due to personal reasons is now set to miss the first three ODIs of against Australia, confirmed BCCI on Thursday evening. Dhawan who was a part of the 16-member squad announced last week he will not be participating in the first three matches as the southpaw has to attend his wife who is unwell. “Team India opener Mr Shikhar Dhawan has requested to be released from the team for the first three ODIs of the Paytm Australia tour of India, 2017 to attend to his wife, who is unwell,” a BCCI release stated, as per PTI.
Given that Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul are a part of the squad and both have opened for India in the past, the Senior Selection Committee has decided not to name any replacement for Dhawan for the first three matches. During the last series against Sri Lanka also, Dhawan had left after the One-day Internationals as his mother was unwell at that time.
Back then, Rahane had opened the batting alongside Rohit Sharma in the final ODI while captain Virat Kohli himself played the role in the T20I. Even though the selectors have retained most players from the Sri Lankan tour, fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav were added to the squad while Shardul Thakur was left out. Spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were also given rest.
Here is the squad:
Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Ajinkya Rahane, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami.
