Anil Kumble becomes the 11th coach for the India cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman BCCI President Anurag Thakur made the announcement today at 6 pm.

To pick the new coach for the Indian cricket team, a panel consisting of iconic former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sanjay Jagdale (co-ordinator) were expected to submit the final report today in Dharamsala. To recap, on Wednesday, the race was wide open with 2 strong contenders emerging the form of Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri. While the Karnataka spin bowler was ahead in the morning, the Mumbai man caught up and is actually leading the race. Unconfirmed reports said that BCCI was keen on the latter and it had the backing of Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli. This emerged after both the former cricketers made their presentations to the panel – Kumble personally and Shastri via video from London.

Initially, there were as many 57 candidates on the probable list for Indian coach which was slashed down to 21 for the panel to consider – Kumble himself was not on this pruned list, but it was left to the panel to call those who were not mentioned there. The Indian Express reveals that Kumble was not included because he doesn’t meet two criteria set for aspirants – doesn’t have any previous coaching experience at first-class or international level and he is not a certified coach.

Express also revealed that at late evening on Thursday, Ganguly said: “Around 10 candidates gave their interviews today, we have made our choice and the name will be forwarded to the Secretary tonight itself. The interview process is now over. There will be no more interviews after this.”

Current Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has expressed gratitude to Ravi Shastri over his role as Team Director in the recent past that prepped the team up to standout achievements. However, Ganguly has said that the panel would not consult current players about the new coach.
