England vs Iran Highlights: Kane Harry-led England romped Iran as ‘Three Lions’ won the opening match against Iran in the Group B match on the Day 2 of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Monday. Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling scored three goals for England giving the former World Cup winner a defining edge over Iran. Later, second goal by Saka and a super tap-in by Jack Grealish made it 6-2 for England. For Iran, Mehdi Taremi scored two goals to keep the team alive in the match.
Meanwhile, under the pressure from FIFA, the English side had to ditch the idea of wearing ‘One Love’ armbands. Now, latest reports suggest that not only England, six other European nations will not wear the armbands. There was a heart-touching moment when the Iranian footballers refused to sing the national anthem to mark their respect for the protesters of Hijab stir.
Notably, this will be the first time that these teams will be playing against each other. Taking a look at the World Cup performance of England (current FIFA ranking: 5), the team took the trophy home in 1966; while Iran (current FIFA ranking 20) has never progressed to the knockout stage in the World Cup. However, Iran has a good recent past record as they won two games out of their last five games. England, on the other hand, have not won a single match in their last six games.
