The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) was forced to schedule an emergency meeting as more than 16,000 fans cancelled pre-booked football World Cup tickets on Monday, January 12.
The reasons for cancelling the tickets varied, but there was a consensus among fans that they were cancelled because of the host nation’s policies and politics. The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by the United States of America (USA), Canada and Mexico.
Reason For Such Dramatic Cancellations
Although the campaign for ticket cancellation is mainly driven by influencers, it’s by and large focused on US President Donald Trump’s policies. Netizens, while requesting ticket cancellations, mentioned Trump’s policies regarding the embargo, trade and capture of the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as reasons not to go to the States and thereby avoid giving them business.
What are FIFA’s Plans?
FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, most likely to attend the meeting, which is scheduled next week, as per a report in Roya News, will most likely be focused on curtailing the online protest and answering the fans’ queries as soon as possible. It might also provide a brief on critical security measures that the body will take to reassure fans.
The Biggest Football World Cup Ever
The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup will be the biggest ever, with a total of 48 teams participating. Previously, the highest number of teams in a single edition of the World Cup was 32.
Three countries hosting a single edition of the games is also a first-of-its-kind arrangement. Argentina are the title holder as they defeated France in the final of the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar.
The problem that FIFA faces is unique in the sense that its biggest World Cup was supposed to pave the way for similar tournaments in the future. But it is turning out to be quite a headache. The next World Cup in 2030 will also be hosted by three nations together. The hosts for the 2030 World Cup are Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
