The Home of the IPL 2025 Champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is officially reopening its gates. In a landmark decision on Thursday (February 12), the Karnataka Cabinet cleared the path for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to return to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, ending a dark, months-long hiatus following the tragic events of June 2025.
However, securing a ticket for an RCB home game might have just gotten toughter, with new safety guidelines allowing lesser spectators at the stadium.
The long wait for the ’12th Man
Cricket had come to a standstill at the iconic venue after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden title celebrations turned into a nightmare. A stampede outside the stadium during the victory parade left 11 fans dead and over 30 injured, leading to an immediate suspension of matches and a high-level inquiry by the Justice John Michael Cunha committee.
For the RCB faithful, famously known as the ’12th Man’, the news brings a mix of relief and somber reflection. The stadium has been silent since that fateful June night, but the Cabinet’s nod signifies that the venue is finally ready to host the defending Champions.
The ‘new’ Chinnaswamy: Safety first
The return comes with strict strings attached. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil confirmed that while matches are allowed, the Home Department will issue a ‘special order’ within the next 48 hours outlining mandatory safety protocols for the KSCA and RCB management.
Key changes fans will see include widened entry points. Following recommendations from the Maheshwar Rao panel, stadium gates are being significantly widened to prevent bottlenecking during high-pressure exits.
In addition, an intensive crowd Revision has been ordered, a deep dive into crowd management processes to ensure the 2025 tragedy is never repeated. There is also expected to be a strict Access control with new conditions will dictate exactly how and when fans enter and exit the premises during the upcoming IPL season.
RCB has even proposed installing 300-350 AI-enabled cameras at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for IPL 2026 to enhance crowd management, safety and surveillance.
IPL 2026 Season: A title defence at home
With the legal hurdle cleared, the focus now shifts back to the pitch. RCB, the reigning IPL champions, will finally get to defend their crown on their own turf. The atmosphere is expected to be electric but tempered by a new era of vigilance.
