If anyone was questioning South Africa’s World Cup credentials, tonight’s performance leaves no room for doubt. They handed a thorough beating to an unbeaten New Zealand side, showcasing both control and firepower. First, the bowlers held New Zealand to just 175, well below par on a pitch that has seen bigger totals chased down with ease.

In the chase, South Africa looked completely at ease. Aiden Markram led the charge, punishing anything in the slot with crisp, authoritative hitting. Even though New Zealand picked up three wickets, they barely slowed the momentum, this was a chase dominated from ball one.

After a tense Super Over victory over Afghanistan, which could have swung either way, South Africa have sent a clear message tonight: they are a force to be reckoned with in this tournament.

"Yeah, obviously we know it's a good wicket and the opening batters especially showed some great intent. So we knew we were going to have make a plan and take some wickets upfront. (what worked on this wicket?) I think the slower balls into the wicket worked well and then obviously the yorkers on the wicket. So it was good to see you have to change it up and adapt, I guess," Janese said.

"And I think we did that really well. Yeah, bowling in the powerplay and at the death is not easy. And then there's like today, you just take it as it comes and days where it's not your day, you just try and adapt and try to make the best out of it. (bases all covered in this side?) Yeah, I think the bowlers did really well. Also, then, well, obviously our seamers also complement each other really well. I think the plan here was really good and yeah, really skilful," he added.

"Enjoying every moment, but there will be new challenges coming in another circuit. Yeah, I think each ground, we just know how to please the other guys who have played in the IPL, so there's a lot of noise in the group as well. So we just try to take every day as it comes, try and see who we're playing against and then we just take it from there," he further said.

Dewald Brevis goes for another big shot and pays the price. Rachin Ravindra slightly drags the length back, and Brevis steps down the track, misjudging the pitch of the ball. One hand comes off the bat as he tries to loft it, and it carries straight to Daryl Mitchell at long-on.

A simple catch but it ends a promising innings prematurely. Brevis departs after a lively start.

What a monstrous strike from Dewald Brevis. Rachin Ravindra floats a slower, good-length delivery just outside off, but Brevis isn’t fazed. He rocks back onto the back foot, unleashes his raw power and muscles it flat and clean over long-off. That’s a huge maximum, well clear of the fielder.

7.5, FOUR! A sharp moment of fielding drama, but the runs sneak through. James Neesham bowls a short delivery just outside off, and Dewald Brevis goes on the back foot, pulling it flat and hard. Glenn Phillips is stationed at deep mid-wicket and sprints in from the fence, trying to make a flying stop. He leaps with an outstretched right hand, a near-Superman effort but the ball just clears him and races away for four. A fantastic attempt from Phillips, but Brevis benefits from a little luck and excellent placement.

Ryan Rickelton departs thanks to a brilliant piece of work from Daryl Mitchell. James Neesham delivers full just outside off, intended as a leg-cutter but it comes out seam-up. Rickelton gets forward, aiming to loft, but only manages to nick it off the bottom of the bat.

Mitchell, right on the ropes, shows impeccable judgement. He adjusts on the run, lobs the ball slightly back, moves left, then back in, and clings on. A perfect catch and Mitchell celebrates in style.

What a knock this has been. Mitchell Santner floats it up full outside off, and Aiden Markram strides forward with confidence. He lifts it straight back down the ground, clearing the fielder with ease as it sails into the stands.

That brings up a breathtaking 50 off just 19 balls. A calm raise of the bat follows, and the South African dugout rises in applause. It also equals the fastest half-century of this tournament, a sensational display of power and precision.

83 runs, South Africa’s joint-highest Powerplay total in T20 World Cup history, equalling the 83 for 0 against England cricket team in 2016.

It’s also their joint-fourth-highest Powerplay return in all T20 Internationals, a blistering start that has completely seized early control of this contest.

Aiden Markram keeps targeting that extra-cover pocket. Lockie Ferguson goes a shade fuller than a good length, not quite a half-volley but it’s enough for Markram. He gets on top of the bounce, trusts his hands and drills it past cover with authority. No matter how many fielders crowd the ring, he’s threading the gaps at will and it races away yet again.

4.4, OUT! Bowled him! That’s the breakthrough New Zealand were desperate for. Lockie Ferguson goes over the wicket and cleverly rolls his fingers across a 125kph leg-cutter, pitching it fuller. Quinton de Kock clears his front leg, looking to whip it into the leg side, but he’s through the shot too early.

He misses completely, and the ball sneaks past to crash into leg stump. Three quiet deliveries, then the change of angle and pace, a smart setup from Ferguson.

The standout blow? That second six was outrageous. An on-drive struck on the up, with barely any room to free the arms, yet Aiden Markram generated enough timing and power to send it soaring. It was audacious, clean and utterly commanding.

South Africa are flying at 51 for 0 after three overs, and Markram is setting the tone in emphatic fashion.

1.4, FOUR! South Africa are off to a blazing start. Lockie Ferguson serves it up full outside off and Quinton de Kock responds with a picture-perfect cover drive. He leans into it, meets it under his eyes and creams it in front of square. No need to run. He knows it’s racing away the moment it leaves the bat.

1.2, FOUR! And that’s the risk of removing the slip. Lockie Ferguson goes fuller and straighter, just outside off. Aiden Markram shapes to drive but closes the face slightly, and the outside edge flies quickly through the vacant cordon. It whistles away fine for four, a slip in place might well have had a chance.

1.1, SIX! What a welcome. Lockie Ferguson goes full just outside off, and Aiden Markram produces a gem. He sinks into his back knee, creates the leverage and lifts it gloriously over extra cover. The timing is pristine, and with Ferguson’s pace behind it, the ball sails all the way into the stands.

0.5, FOUR! A touch aerial, but safely through. Matt Henry overpitches around off and Quinton de Kock checks his drive, chipping it straight back past the bowler. Henry flings out his right hand in reaction, but it’s well beyond his reach. Once it beats him, there’s no stopping it as it speeds away to the boundary.

0.3, FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for Markram. The off-side ring had just been strengthened, but it makes no difference. Henry goes a touch fuller this time, and Markram responds with elegance, leaning forward and stroking it sweetly through extra cover. Perfect placement, and it races away to the fence.

South Africa are up and running. Matt Henry doesn’t quite overpitch it, but the line is invitingly outside off. Aiden Markram leans into it, meets the ball on the up and times it beautifully in front of square. That crisp sound off the bat tells you everything about this surface, a gorgeous boundary to get things going.

Welcome back. During the interval, the groundstaff were out with the super sopper, working hard to mop up the dew. The conditions are a little tricky now, the ball could skid on, and gripping it won’t be straightforward for New Zealand’s bowlers. That said, a couple of early breakthroughs could quickly shift the momentum.

Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock walk out to the middle. Markram will take first strike as Matt Henry prepares to open the bowling.

Henry stands at the top of his mark, eyes fixed on Markram. There’s a solitary slip in place, an attacking hint to start the chase. Here we go.

19.5, FOUR! He won’t worry about how it came. Corbin Bosch serves up a full toss around off, and James Neesham swings hard. It comes off the inner half of the bat and squirts backward of square on the leg side. Not the cleanest strike, but it finds space and races away for four.

18.5, FOUR! A handy boundary at just the right time. Marco Jansen hits a short-of-a-length delivery, and James Neesham shuffles well across his stumps. He gets inside the line and laps it fine, threading it neatly between the keeper and short fine leg. Not perfectly middled, but that slight miscue is what helps it find the gap and run away to the fence.

17.3, FOUR! Not convincing, but they all count. Kagiso Rabada bangs it in short of a length and offers a bit of width. Matt Henry has a wild slash at it, and the thick outside edge flies away fine past third man. Streaky runs but New Zealand won’t mind one bit at this stage.

The collapse gathers pace. From 138 for 4 to 145 for 7, the innings is unravelling quickly. Corbin Bosch pitches it up at the stumps, and Mitchell Santner, who never really settled, tries to manufacture something. He stays leg-side and opens the face, attempting to slice it over backward point.

The ball hangs in the air, and Ryan Rickelton moves smartly to his left, keeps his eyes locked on it and completes a sharp two-handed catch. Not the easiest chance, but safely held.

Superb game awareness from Aiden Markram. He squeezes in a tight over from his spinner after Chapman’s dismissal, builds the pressure, and then brings Lungi Ngidi back into the attack. The move pays off instantly.

Ngidi goes full and angles it into Daryl Mitchell, who backs his favoured straight hit. But he doesn’t quite get under it this time. The ball travels flat and straight down the throat of Tristan Stubbs at long-on, who makes no mistake.

Both set batters are now back in the pavilion, and there’s still plenty of overs left in the innings.

A soft end to a fine knock. Marco Jansen rolls in a slower ball that grips in the surface. Mark Chapman is through the shot too early, the bat face closing slightly, and the leading edge lobs tamely towards backward point. Ryan Rickelton settles under it, briefly losing sight of the ball in the glare, but steadies himself to complete a straightforward catch. A much-needed breakthrough for South Africa, and Jansen claims his fourth wicket.
