Following a late hiccup, Team India managed to digest the Kiwi challenge in Vadodara, registering a four-wicket victory and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Led by the 37-year-old flamboyant and in-form Virat Kohli’s 93 off 91, India chased down the 301-run target with an over to go. Ankit Pattnaik breaks down some interesting stats and records that were shattered following the completion of the first ODI.

301 – This is India’s second-highest successful run-chase against New Zealand. The highest being 316 chased in Bengaluru in 2010.

9 – The Kiwis lost an ODI match after nine consecutive wins following the Champions Trophy, 2025. Interestingly, they last lost to India only, in the final of the CT in Dubai.

8 – India registered their eighth straight victory over NZ since 2023. Since 2017, the Men in Blue have won identically eight straight matches at home against the Kiwis.

The Chase Masters

20 – India consolidated on their record of chasing 300-plus totals in ODIs. Today’s was their 20th successful 300-plus run-chase which is the highest in history. England follows with 15 while Australia has 14 successful chases.

Mount 28K

Kohli becomes the fastest batter to score over 28,000 international runs in 624 innings. He is now only the third player ever to scale the 28k-run mark, joining legends Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Tendulkar reached the mark in 644 inns and Sangakkara in 666 inns.

16 – Following today’s match-defining knock of 93, Virat Kohli, now has 16 scores of 50-plus knocks against NZ, just two behind Ricky Ponting.

76 – Kohli’s domination against NZ at home soil continues as he averages 75.93 in ODIs at present which includes five tons and six half-centuries.

5 – Following the 93 vs NZ, this was Kohli’s fifth consecutive 50-plus scores in ODIs (unique feat achieved by none for this many times) and astonishingly, the legend has done this on five occasions now. His last five ODI scores read: 74*, 135, 102, 65*, 93 – all these runs have come against SENA countries!

– Kohli missed his 53rd ODI ton by seven runs. However, he has 77 half-centuries to his name. This was also his 2nd fifty-plus knock in a successful run-chase of 300-plus. He has seven centuries to his name! A world-record.

3 – With 45 player of the match awards, Kohli is now behind only legends: Sachin Tendulkar (62) and Sanath Jayasuriya (48).
