Capturing India through colonial lens
"Typecasting: Photographing the Peoples of India, 1855-1920" at Bikaner House, New Delhi challenges the instinct to read photographs as evidence of caste, tribe, and difference. Curated by historian Sudeshna Guha, the exhibition presents nearly 200 photographs and objects from the 19th century, inviting viewers to confront the ways in which photography has fixed people into types.
