Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India’s economic performance has positioned it as a major engine of global growth at a time when the international economy is facing widespread uncertainty and slowdown.

Addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, Modi said the country’s 8.2% GDP growth in the second quarter of the current fiscal represents more than a statistical milestone.

“This is not just a number but is a strong macroeconomic signal. It is a message that India is becoming the growth driver of the global economy,” Modi said. The PM noted that global growth is currently around 3%, while the G7 countries are growing at only about 1.5% on average. On the other hand, India is charting a unique trajectory, he said.

“At such a time, India is a model of high growth and low inflation,” PM Modi said. He further added that concerns that were once frequently raised by economists over high inflation have now been replaced by recognition of price stability.

‘India in a different league’ amid global uncertainty

Modi said the world has undergone multiple disruptions over the past 25 years, financial crises, the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid technological shifts, geopolitical fragmentation and ongoing wars. “All these situations are challenging the global community. But amid this atmosphere of uncertainty, India is being seen in a different league altogether,” the Prime Minister said.

He described an emerging national mindset rooted in resilience and ambition, pushing the country beyond the “mentality of colonialism” that once dampened confidence.

“India is full of self-confidence,” Modi said. “When there is talk of slowdown, India writes the story of growth. When there is trust deficit in the world, India is becoming a pillar of trust. When the world moves towards fragmentation, India is becoming a bridge builder,” added Modi.

Fundamental change over a decade

Modi asserted that India’s achievements over the past decade reflect deep structural and behavioural transformation not temporary gains. “India’s achievements are not ordinary. It is not about numbers alone. It is about a fundamental change brought about over the last decade,” he said.

The Prime Minister concluded that India’s growth momentum and its rising global credibility signal a future where the country plays an increasingly central role in shaping global economic outcomes.
