Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: In a clash of titans, how do both southern superstar Rajinikanth and almost pan-India, barring South of course, megastar Salman Khan stack up against each other in the box office collections race? With Kabali released today, the timing to do a 'vs' report is almost ideal. Salman Khan's Sultan was released recently and is almost at the end of its run. On the other hand, Rajinikanth's Kabali is set for release on Friday, July 22nd. Barring the fact that both actors command a huge fan base, which creates a manic aura around the actors, there is little similarity between both – except of course the fact that they can defy the laws of physics at will, reality is cirumvented on demand and they get good to triumph over evil, eventually, after having shed much blood, usually that of their rivals, along the way. The plot is thin, the film is big on emotion and heartbreak and the effect on the fans, and the general public, is mesmerising. Rajinikanth, in particular, likes to play around with Einstein's laws more liberally to create spectacular cosmos-altering effects. (AP Photo)

Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: Aside from that, both Rajinikanth and Salman Khan have very little in common. Even in real life, while Rajinikanth does not care to maintain a muscled physique, and even sports a bald look and is seen in a lungi, Salman Khan is always well-turned out, muscles taut, a hair-do to die for, flaunting snappy clothes. The entire package is refreshing. Having said that, it is a truism that Rajinikant fans would go to any extent for their icon. The same cannot be said of Salman. (AP Photo)

Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: Both actors have the power to move mountains and make money hand over fist, the revenue generated by both is humongous. But there is a problem, a divergence of fortunes so to speak. While Rajinikanth has not been able to ensure the kind of superhits that generate money by the truckfuls in recent years (before you get mad at us, dear reader, just see what happened to Lingaa and Robot), which left filmmakers and distributors licking their wounds and chasing after Rajinikanth in courts, Salman Khan has had no such worries to take care of. Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: Not that Salman Khan is a stranger to controversises and courts. He does have a knack for getting into controversies, but that is mostly in his private life. In reel life, however, he churns out a perfectly professional performance – time after time, ever since he entered the industry. Salman Khan has been climbing the charts relentlessly. Almost every film he has released over the recent period hit the jackpot and it magically turns into Rs 100 cr, Rs 200 cr and more movies. Sultan being the latest to ride into the Rs 200 cr club and now it is even eyeing the Rs 300 cr mark which at the moment has reached tentalisingly close to that mark. (Reuters Photo)

Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: While Rajinkanth has opted for the merchandise route to promote his film (from AirAsia, to mugs and T-shirts, to silver coins and more) as well as doing the regular promos to ensure maximum juice can be derived to pad up the collections. It is in fact a guarantee of certain amount of revenue flowing to the producers so that they are not totally dependent on the vagaries of the box office – in short hedging their bets. While certain Bollywood actors like Hrithik Roshan have done these kind of deals (remember Krrish!), Salman Khan is confidence personified. He manages to generate enough through the box office to make sure he, his producers make outstanding profits. No matter how expensive the movie may be to make, he marches boldly alone to generate revenues to match the profits in their minds. (AP Photo)

Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: However, there is a catch. Sultan tickets have been quoted at as high a figure as Rs 1,500. The average mostly works out to over Rs 500 each at least going into the opening weekend and thereafter in the first week. Rajinikanth Kabali tickets were available for anything from under Rs 100 to Rs 120. In Tamil Nadu there is cap on movie tickets that does not allow overcharging. However, reports have indicated that Kabali tickets have been sold at Rs 700 too. This is being done at the level of theatres and the filmmakers are not going to get any advantage from it. So, even if he moves mountains, Rajinikanth is not going to see earnings as high as what this Bollywood badshah manages. (AP Photo)

Kabali vs Sultan box office collections: Ultimately, a movie's earnings are totally dependent on the content. Quality content attracts money, otherwise not. Whether you are Rajinikanth or Salman Khan, the idea is to get the plotline right and then carry it out with aplomb. May the best man win. And keep your fingers crossed! (AP Photo)
