Since 1957, India has submitted films for the Oscars, for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Mehboob Khan's Hindi film Mother India in 1957 was India's first submission. The epic drama made it to the final shortlist. It was nominated along with four other films in the same category. It lost to Nights of Cabiria by a single vote. So since 1957, the journey of Bollywood films at the Oscars has been memorable. However, only three Indian movies have been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars - Mother India, Salaam Bombay!, and Lagaan.
