Facebook makes it easier to tweak what you see in your feed
New tools will help you weed through the clutter of boring, unwanted information, often from long-forgotten acquaintances, and surface the gems from close friends and interesting pages. You’ll now be able to choose the friends and pages you want to see on your news feed first. To do this, go to the friend’s profile. Click on the box that says “following” and select “see first.” Facebook’s computer software uses a wide range of information you provide to decide what to show. This includes what friends you interact with and how often, or whether you tend to like photos, videos or text updates more. In announcing the new tools on Friday, Facebook acknowledged that its automated system isn’t perfect, so it wants to give users a way to set their own preferences. In addition to selecting who or what page you will see first, you’ll still to be able to “unfollow” friends so you won’t see them at all. This option has been available before to people who don’t want to take drastic step of unfriending someone but would rather not read about their lives. Microsoft’s mobile future hinges on success of Windows 10
Microsoft Inc’s future in mobile devices likely hinges on the software maker’s ability to convince developers to create apps for the phone version of Windows 10 after its ill-fated Nokia acquisition helped trigger 7,800 layoffs. The job cuts announcement is an acknowledgement that its 2013 $7.2 billion purchase of Nokia was never going to help paltry sales of its Windows Phone, and that it needed a new approach. Microsoft said it would also write down about $7.6 billion related to its Nokia business. The cuts indicate that Microsoft will likely focus its mobile efforts on its high-stakes Windows 10 software release, due in late July, rather than on developing smartphones, analysts said. The software’s apps are supposed to work across desktops, tablets and phones with little tweaking. The company is betting that the popularity of Windows on desktop PCs will lead to more apps for the mobile version of Windows and entice more consumers to buy its phones. Read full story (09/07/2015)

Microsoft Office in a world of multiple devices
Microsoft’s new Office apps do a good job of helping us navigate a world in which we frequently switch from one device to another – from a Mac to a Windows PC, with a smartphone or tablet along the way. The company released Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac on Thursday and new apps for Android phones two weeks ago. New ones for Windows phones and tablets are coming this summer and for Windows PCs this fall. They join apps for iPads, iPhones and Android tablets. An Office 365 subscription gets you all this – $70 for a single Mac or Windows PC at a time, or $100 for five. Mobile apps are free, though a subscription unlocks advance features that most people won’t need. Mac and Windows versions are sold the traditional way, too, with a one-time payment, though you can’t use Office on another PC without buying it again.

Read full review: Microsoft Office (09/07/2015)

Cross Grabado Tech+ wallet: Is it a good buy at Rs 4,999?
There are very few adults who haven’t lost, or at least forgotten, their wallets at least once. But technology will soon make this an improbability, thanks to wallets that can be embedded in tracker. In fact, these tiny trackers, which will soon start being embedded in everything from key rings to soft toys, will be our first mass exposure to the Internet of Things. Cross Grabado tech+ wallet is what is called an anti-theft wallet, one that is almost impossible to lose. That is not because the wallet is smart, but because it has a small cookie like tracker inside that connects with a smartphone using an app. The entire setup is really easy. The tracker needs to be pressed for three seconds for it to be switched on after which it become discoverable for the Cross Tracker app that you download on the phone. Couldn’t get easier.

Read full story: Cross Grabado Tech+ wallet (09/07/2015)
