5. Indian Railways case of vanishing surplus: Lalu Prasad introduced several other initiatives during his tenure, including simplification of freight tariff; introducing dynamic pricing, full rake options, overloading freight wagons by up to 4 tonnes by reconsidering the safety formula of 1960s; and outsourcing without triggering hostility by avoiding workers' retrenchment. Many of the decisions did have long-term beneficial impact. But the myth of surplus was derailed. It's not known whether business schools still teach courses on how not to conjure up a surplus in an organisation. (PTI)

Govt's decision in Ishrat Jahan case 'bizarre', says Congress
Congress tonight termed as "bizarre" the Centre's decision not to grant sanction to prosecute four Intelligence Bureau officials in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case and said the move indicates that the NDA government has something to hide. In a statement, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said the entire world knows that "Ishrat Jahan and three others were killed in a fake encounter". It was in this background that the CBI had sought the permission of the Union Home Ministry for prosecuting four IB officials including former Special Director Rajender Kumar for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind these killings, Azad said. "It is bizarre that instead of granting the permission to prosecute the official so that one could come to the final conclusion, the Home Ministry has chosen to deny the permission on flimsy grounds which clearly indicates that the ministry has something to hide," he said.
Image Caption: Congress senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad interacts with party leaders at Sadaqat Ashram in Patna on Saturday.
