Rahul walks 20-km in scorching Vidarbha heat </br><br> Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who has amplified his tirade against the Narendra Modi government over farmers' issues, today braved the sweltering heat when he strode the distance of 20-km as part of his 'kisan padyatra' in Amravati district to interact with the kin of farmers who have committed suicide due to agrarian crisis. During his day-long 'padyatra', Rahul visited five villages and met family members of at least nine farmers who have killed themselves. Transport strike hits normal life in many states</br><br> Normal life was disturbed in several parts of the country as employees of state transport corporations and some private operators went on a 24-hour strike against the proposed Motor Bill, ignoring the Center's appeal to call it off. Kerala, Haryana, Assam and Karantaka were severely hit as buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws went off roads. Normal life was partially hit in West Bengal due to a 12-hour general strike called by opposition parties to protest against alleged violence and malpractices in the just-held civic polls.</br><br> In Delhi, strike had a partial impact on normal life. Commuters faced problems in getting transport at railway stations and airports. Supporting the strike, around 25 per cent of Delhi Transport Corporation buses did not operate. VHP objects to Pakistan sending beef for Nepal relief</br><br> VHP today raised strong objections to reports that Pakistan has sent beef as part of its relief material to quake-hit Nepal victims. In a statement, VHP's Delhi unit general secretary Ramkrishan Srivastav said by doing so Pakistan has hurt the religious sentiments of the people of Nepal, which has banned cow slaughter and consumption of beef. No bandh is observed in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee</br><br> "No bandh was observed in West Bengal today," was how state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the general strike called by the opposition parties to protest against alleged violence in the just-concluded civic polls. The Chief Minister accused the BJP and the CPI(M) of trying to drag the state backward. "No bandh has been observed (in the state). CPI(M), BJP and a media group, who harmed the state for 34 years, are trying to cause more damage. They are trying to drag the state backward," she told reporters. (PTI) (30/04/2015)
