Guru Purnima 2016: The festival, though traditionally celebrated by Buddhists in remembrance of Lord Buddha, who gave his first sermon on this day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, it is celebrated by many Hindus too, for whom this day is marked by remembering and paying homage to the great sage Vyasa, a symbol of the guru-shishya tradition. Guru Purnima 2016: Why is Guru Purnima celebrated? Traditionally the festival is celebrated by Buddhists in honor of the lord Buddha who gave His first sermon on this day at Sarnath,Uttar Pradesh. However the followers of Hindu religion celebrate Guru Purnima as the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. Veda Vyasa, also known as Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa, is the author of Mahabharata, Vedas and Puranas.
