1. JNU fines Kanhaiya Kumar Rs 10,000; rusticates Umar Khalid, 2 others: JNU today rusticated Umar Khalid and two other students for varying duration and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with the February 9 event on the campus against Afzal Guru's hanging. Umar was rusticated for one semester, another student leader Anirban Bhattacharya till July 15 and Mujeeb Gattoo for two semesters. As per decision, Bhattacharya has been barred from pursuing any course in JNU for next 5 years. JNU students union president Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban were arrested on charges of sedition in February in connection with the controversial event and are out on bail. 2. Firing at Ravindra Jadeja wedding: An FIR has been filed with regard to the celebratory firing during the wedding of Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja here on April 17. Jadeja, currently playing for Gujarat Lions in the IPL, married Riva Solanki on April 17. During the procession to the marriage venue, one of the relatives of Jadeja fired six rounds in the air from a pistol. The act was caught on camera. "We had sought visuals and other videos related to the marriage from the Jadeja family and after examining them thoroughly we found that a person had opened fire in the air," said M N Rana of Lodhika tehsil police station. "He is Kripalsinh Jadeja, a maternal relative of Ravindra Jadeja," Rana said. (Image Source: PTI)

Outrage over Salman Khan role: Bollywood star Salman Khan's appointment as goodwill ambassador of India's contingent for the upcoming Rio Olympics drew mixed responses today even as noted scriptwriter Salim Khan defended his son. As a debate raged over the appointment, BJP MP and yesteryear actress Hema Malini supported the decision of the Indian Olympic Association(IOA), saying Salman's popularity is being utilised for a good cause. 4. Jayalalithaa assets now worth less than in 2015: AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today declared assets worth Rs 113.73 crore, Rs.3.40 crore less than what she had declared last year. She has movable assets, total value of which is Rs 41.63 crore and immovable properties valued at Rs 72.09 crore and the total value is Rs 113.73 crore, according to the affidavit filed by her to contest from Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency here. She has Rs 41,000 cash in hand, listed Rs 2.04 crore as liabilities and declared agriculture in the profession-occupation column, it said. In the 2015 bypoll in the same RK Nagar seat, she had declared total assets of Rs 117.13 crore, which included Rs 45.04 crore of movable and Rs 72.09 crore of immovable assets. In 2011 assembly election, while contesting from Srirangam constituency, she had declared assets of Rs 51.40 crore. In 2006 polls, the value was Rs 24.7 crore. (Image Source: PTI)

Pratyusha Banerjee death: The Bombay High Court today granted anticipatory bail to producer Rahul Raj Singh, accused of abetting the suicide of actress Pratyusha Banerjee, after observing that prima facie there is no evidence to show that the accused "instigated or intentionally aided the suicide. "From the statements of witnesses, it is clearly seen that harassment and disputes were there between the applicant accused (Rahul) and the victim (Pratyusha). But prima facie, there is nothing on record to show abetment," Justice Mridula Bhatkar said. The court was hearing the application filed by Rahul seeking pre-arrest bail after the sessions court rejected his plea. The high court, while granting his application, directed Rahul to appear before the Bangur Nagar police, which is probing the case, thrice a week for two weeks. (Image Source: PTI)

6. Mamata Banerjee claims majority: With two more phases to go before the six-phase Assembly election in West Bengal ends, TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee today claimed that her party had reached the majority mark, while CPI-M state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra made a claim that the CPI(M)-Congress alliance would win 200 seats. "Today the fourth phase of polls was held. If I understand politics, after this phase of polls we have already attained the majority mark needed to form the new government. You can check it when the results are announced," Banerjee told an election meeting here. DMK chief Karunanidhi declares assets: DMK President M Karunanidhi has declared assets of Rs 13.42 crore in his affidavit filed along with his nomination papers for the Tiruvarur assembly segment today. As per the affidavit, these assets come under movable category as he has declared that he does not have any immovable property or agricultural land. His wives have Rs 45.34 crore worth of movable assets. 92-year-old Karunanidhi, who is contesting from Tiruvarur for the second time, has declared a total income of Rs 1.21 crore for 2014-15 and has Rs 50,000 as cash in hand. He has bank deposits to the tune of Rs 12.73 crore and shares at Anjugam Printers valued at Rs 10.22 lakh. Karunanidhi's first wife Dayalu Ammal has bank deposits of Rs 99.67 crore and holds 60 lakh shares in Kalaignar Television Ltd valued at Rs six crore. She also has old jewellery of 716.34 grams valued at Rs 15.65 lakh. Karunanidhi's second wife Rajathi Ammal has bank deposits of Rs 22.88 lakh and holds 25 lakh shares in Westgate Logistics valued at Rs 2.50 crore. She holds jewellery of 640 grams valued at Rs 13.98 lakh. During 2011 assembly polls, Karunanidhi and his wives had declared movable assets of Rs 41.13 crore. (Image Source: PTI)

Kuldeep Bishnoi's party decides to merge with Congress: Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal's son Kuldeep Bishnoi today met Rahul Gandhi and said his party Haryana Janhit Congress will merge with the Congress to "uproot" BJP from the state. The merger is expected to give a boost to the Congress among non-Jats. AICC general secretary in-charge for the state Shakeel Ahmed said that the merger will be announced jointly by leaders of the two parties in the AICC on April 28. "Not only among OBCs but among all sections, the merger will help consolidate our base," he said. Insisting that the plan to merge his party with the Congress is "completely non-conditional", Bishnoi, who had ealier allied with the BJP, expressed confidence that the coming together of HJC and Congress will mark the beginning of BJP's fall. FIR against BJP's Roopa Ganguly for assaulting TMC activist: An FIR was today lodged against BJP leader Roopa Ganguly for allegedly assaulting a woman Trinamool Congress activist and also "obstructing" her from casting her vote at a poll booth in Howrah. TV cameras showed Ganguly pushing the hand of Soma Das outside the poll booth after a heated altercation. In her police complaint, Das alleged she was assaulted by the BJP leader when she went along with her mother to cast their votes. She also complained that Ganguly told her not to cast her vote. Ganguly, the actress-turned-politician, is the BJP candidate from Howrah North seat. She has denied the allegations claiming it was the Trinamool workers who pushed her. (Image Source: PTI)

Income-Tax Dept sends fresh questions to Amitabh Bachchan: Income Tax department has sent a fresh set of queries to megastar Amitabh Bachchan after his recent denial of having any connection with the offshore companies mentioned in the 'Panama Papers'. Sources said the department has sent a new set of questions to Bachchan seeking further details of his financial transactions as mentioned in the reports by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and relying on some "old information about the assessee" lying with the department. They said, the actor, in his recent reply to the IT department, had categorically "denied" having any connection with or stake in the four alleged offshore firms as claimed in the leaked documents of the Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca.
