For instance, in just one case, close to a third of Punjab National Bank’s gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of Rs 34,338 crore have resulted from wilful defaults. Of this amount of Rs 10,869 crore, the top 10 wilful defaulters together owe the New Delhi-headquartered bank Rs 3,554 crore. As at the end December last year, PNB had identified 904 companies as being wilful defaulters and filed cases against some of them. The number at the end of September 2015 was 764 companies and the value of unpaid loans then was Rs 9,204 crore. Of course, there are dozens of other instances as severe. Wilful defaulters list: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said the banks will recover every penny of loan given to him. Jaitey, who was speaking at an event in New Delhi, said investigative agencies will take strong action against the liquor baron wherever he is found to have violated the law. The latest in the bad loans saga is that the finance ministry has convened a meeting of senior bankers of public lenders dealing with large loan defaults next week as part of an exercise to clean up balance sheet of banks. The meet, slated for March 21, will discuss bad loan issues and recovery, sources said. It'll also deliberate on ways how banks can be more proactive in dealing with cases of wilful and genuine defaulters, the sources added. (Express Photo)

Gross NPA of public sector banks (PSBs) rose to Rs 3.61 lakh crore while that of private lenders was at Rs 39,859 crore at the end of December 2015. Gross NPA ratio as percentage of advances rose to 7.30 per cent while for private banks, it stood at 2.36 per cent as of December-end. There are some 7,686 wilful defaulters who owe Rs 66,190 crore to PSBs, 6,816 suits have been filed and FIR has been lodged in 1,669 cases. (Express Photo)
