Raghuram Rajan defends his speech on 'intolerance'

RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has defended his speech that called for tolerance and mutual respect, saying India will be "crazy to lose" the biggest advantage it has to intolerance. "It wasn't a speech about 'here and now'," Rajan told Bloomberg. "It was more about where is the dialogue going and how are we going to maximise the advantage we already have. For that, we need to keep this an open society and we resist all attempts at closing it down. Everyone should "calm down a bit in order to foster healthy debate. You cannot have a debate by screaming at one another," Bloomberg today quoted Rajan as saying. Let the ideas fight each other, but let's not prevent each other from saying what we think," he said. Twitter replaces stars with hearts

Twitter Inc has replaced its star-shaped “favorite” icon with a heart-shaped icon called “like”, the latest effort by the company to make its website more engaging. The company, facing slowing user-growth, joins Facebook and Google’s YouTube in featuring “like” buttons, which have been popular with millions of users. Instagram, the photo-sharing app bought by Facebook in 2012, also has a heart-shaped icon for users to “like” pictures. James Cakmak, an analyst at brokerage Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co, said he thought Twitter was trying to make its site more consistent with experiences on other platforms. “It’s not going to move the needle in any material way,” he said, referring to the company’s efforts to boost user growth. The modification fits with Chief Executive Jack Dorsey’s drive to improve user engagement. (Reuters)

36.5 pc rise in indirect tax receipts a huge positive: Arun Jaitley

The manufacturing sector, a key driver of economy, is seeing an uptick in growth as reflected in robust indirect tax collections, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today. "I can now see trickles of growth. One of the greatest positives I can see is a huge increase in indirect tax revenues. As of October 31, the actual rise has been a staggering 36.5 per cent," he said at the National Strategy Day on India, jointly organised by the World Economic Forum and CII. The 36.5 per cent rise in indirect tax collections "looks bigger because of certain additional revenue measures which we took since November last year", he said. (AP)
Reforms in India to continue irrespective of Bihar poll results: Rahul Bajaj

Noted industrialist and Bajaj Auto Chairman Rahul Bajaj today said economic reforms will continue irrespective of the outcome of Bihar assembly elections. "There will be implications. Those who say there will no implication, I don't agree with them. There will be implications, one way or the other… the way I see Mr Modi, the FM and others in the BJP, irrespective of whether they lose or win, the reforms will continue," he said. On the other hand, he added, the reforms might be pursued more vigorously if the ruling NDA loses elections. "I don't know about Bihar result, but I think reforms will continue…. May be a man like Arun Jaitley will say reforms will continue with more vigour if we lose," he said. (PTI)
