Now that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has stated that no mobile operator can offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content for at least two years, it means an end to any kind of zero-rating service—Airtel Zero or Facebook’s Free Basics—for the time being. That’s a hit for Facebook, considering that India is its second-largest market after the US. While India is not alone in restricting zero-rating services, many other nations are using it as a means to drive data usage.
