In a relief to taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) notified the Centralised Communication Scheme, 2018, under which an assessee will not be required to visit a tax office for resolution of notices issued under Section 133 C of the Income Tax Act. Though notices under Section 133 C only seek information and documentation for verification, the task of physical appearance at the tax office to comply with the notice causes considerable stress and anxiety to the recipient of such notices, tax experts said.
Under the scheme, no personal appearance will be required before the designated authority at the centralised communication centre (CCC) in connection with any proceedings, the notification said. The communication to taxpayers will be carried out by the CCC through mail or by placing a copy in the registered account on the portal followed by an intimation on SMS, requiring the assessee to furnish information or documents for the purpose of verification.
