Desperately trying to link your Aadhaar number with your mobile number online, but unable to do so yet? Wait, it may not happen soon despite linking of the two being made mandatory by the government and the deadline (February 6, 2018) for doing so drawing near. This means that for getting your Aadhaar number linked with your mobile number, you still need to visit the stores of telcos with your active SIM and Aadhaar number and complete the biometric validation on our e-KYC device by scanning your fingerprint. If you don’t have time to do so, then it is your problem.

It may be noted that in a bid to expedite compliance of telecom service providers with the Supreme Court’s order dated 6th February regarding linking of Aadhaar card with mobile number and reverification process of mobile users, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had on 25th October, 2017 simplified the process for linking of Aadhaar with mobile number. As per the new rules, DoT has introduced three new methods to link the registered mobile number with Aadhaar, i.e. OTP (One Time Password) based, App based and the IVRS facility.

“These new methods will help subscribers to get their mobile number linked to Aadhaar without visiting the stores of telcos. For the ease of senior citizens and the people with disability and chronic illness, DoT has also recommended for the re-verification at subscribers’ doorstep. According to the new guidelines, the telecom operators should provide an online mechanism for people to request such service and based on availability schedule the visit and complete the process,” the Ministry of Communications had said in a press release.

After a few days UIDAI tweeted on November 2 that “By 1 December 2017, you can also choose to verify your mobile SIM with Aadhaar without giving your biometrics to Telecom Service Providers.” It further said, “No need to give finger prints to local SIM card retailer for your mobile phone verification. From December 1, 2017, you can do it from comfort of your home through OTP received on mobile number registered with Aadhaar.”

However, now as per the latest developments, you will have to wait till January 1, 2018, for re-verifying your mobile number through Aadhaar without vising the retail outlets of telcos. “The licensee must ensure that the above-mentioned category of subscribers shall be able to re-verify their mobile connections through these alternative methods by January 1, 2018,” the DoT said in a notice recently, giving details of the processes of five categories of subscribers, namely, subscribers of foreign nationality, NRIs, senior citizens, physically-challenged persons and IVRS-based OTP authentication process for subscribers having mobile number registered with UIDAI.

Thus, if you want to link your Aadhaar number with your mobile number, then either visit the stores of telcos or wait for at least January 1, 2018 to do it from the comfort of your home! However, the way it is going – as even some leading telecom companies seemed reluctant to talk on this issue when contacted and refused to give any official statement – nobody is sure by when it will happen and whether the Aadhaar-mobile linking deadline of February 6, 2018, will be met!
