The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty extended gains for third day in a row on Wednesday following firm global cues ahead of US Federal Reserve decision that is expected to be out later in the day. Sensex jumped 173.93 points to end at 25,494.37, whereas Nifty climbed 50 points to 7,750.90.

Below are the top 10 stocks that remained in focus today:

NTPC: Share price of the company closed 1.37 per cent up at Rs 133.20 after the company received green signal to a power project in Telangana by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Wipro: Stocks of the IT major Wipro fell after it informed the bourses that the recent floods and rains in Chennai will have a material impact on its third-quarter earnings. The share price of the company closed 0.64 per cent down at Rs 555.

Gas distributing companies: Share price companies like GAIL, Indraprastha Gas (IGL), Petronet LNG and Gujarat Gas hogged limelight as these companies are seen as key beneficiaries from government and judiciary’s focus on pollution. GAIL closed 1.34% up at Rs 344.05, whereas Indraprastha Gas Ltd shares ended 6.79 per cent up at Rs 500.35 and Petronet LNG LTD settled 0.48 per cent up at Rs 240.25. Gujarat Gas scrip closed 5.72 per cent up at Rs 600.75.

Mahindra and Mahindra: Stocks of the company closed 5.44 per cent down at Rs 1218.90 after the Supreme Court banned registering of new diesel SUVs and luxury cars with an engine capacity of over 2000 CC in Delhi to curb air pollution.

Thomas Cook: Travel firm Thomas Cook (India) shares closed 1.45 per cent up at Rs 202.45 after the company said that it has received approval from competition watchdog CCI for its acquisition of rival Kuoni Travel.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd(BHEL): Stocks of the company were trading 2.17 per cent up at Rs 169.70 (10.06 am) after it commissioned a 500 mw thermal power plant in West Bengal. The scrip later closed 1.17 per cent up at Rs 168.05.
